Planet 2050

The Planet Texas 2050 symposium was actually pretty interesting. The program I ended up attending, “Production and Prep: How the Arts Can Participate in Disaster Response”, wasn’t my first choice, but it was the only one that fit my schedule.

Even so, I found “a Production and Prep” really compelling because, in a lot of liberal spaces, conversations about disaster response, revolution, and social movements like protests and boycotts tend to leave out the most marginalized people. This program made a point to center those voices and ensure the audience kept them in mind when thinking about disaster preparedness.

The discussion focused on the Texas winter storms of 2021 and 2023, but the ideas they presented could apply to all kinds of situations. At the end of the day, skills, connections, and access to resources are some of the only things communities have that can’t be taken away without force. Those things form the backbone of any real support system.

The program was mostly about the environmental impact of disasters and how communities can respond, but what stuck with me was how much it emphasized the bigger picture. Disasters don’t happen in a vacuum there are always overlapping crises. But if people know how to use their own skills, networks, and resources, we can actually do something about the problems that just keep piling up.

俳句 (Sena)

Old ways guide us still
Mindful hands shape what we take
Echoes in each grain

和歌 (Sena + Yuki)

Intertwined by time
Mindful hands shape what we take
Echoes in each grain
Currents crash, meet once again
Floating Falling Face to Face

発句 (Sena + Yuki + Halle + David)

Toss Blank seeds of hope
Waves of heat engulf the world
Scorched lands crying out
Voices drown and fraying roots
Pangaea stirs from her sleep
Intertwined by time
Mindful hands shape what we take
Echoes in each grain
Currents crash, meet once again
Floating Falling Face to Face

Mezmerize: A Living Dream

Dreams are peculiar in that they follow no set rules—they simply exist. Their very nature lies in the mind’s ability to keep itself occupied while the body rests, ensuring everything continues to function upon waking.

The exhibition as a whole carried a mesmerizing quality, but The Collective Sigh stood out the most. It did not fit, nor did it try to. It was strange, disjointed, and entirely dreamlike. The confined space, the muted acoustics, and the clashing colors wrapped around the viewer, creating an experience that felt as if one had stepped into a dream.

Among all the exhibits, The Collective Sigh was the only one where the theme of A Living Dream truly came to life. The collective exhibition, however, felt lacking. It was vibrant and whimsical, yet it missed something essential—unpredictability. Though meticulously crafted, the exhibits together failed to capture the chaotic, unexpected nature of dreams.

Individually, each exhibit was intriguing, unique in its own right. However, the coalition of them all dulled that uniqueness. The colors blended, the contrasts faded. But dreams do not merely merge what already belongs together—they fuse what should never coexist, and it is in that impossible collision that their magic lies.
