Mixed Media Blog Prompt: “Visiting Mesmerize: Living Dreams, Immersive Experience”
As I reflect on our recent visit to Mesmerize: Living Dreams, I can only think of the inspiration it brought to me for our team’s immersive experience this summer. Getting to view the space alongside its creators, I was given an entirely new perspective on what it takes to make these experiences come to life. Walking through the experience for the first time, I was captivated first and foremost by the dreamlike state it put me into. Maybe it’s because it was late and I was a bit tired, but I felt like I was able to float around the space seamlessly, and forgot about the rainy weather outside as I immersed myself into the lights and sounds of the exhibit. Even looking back, it feels a bit like a dream.
The aspect of the immersive experience captivated me the most was the sound design. It was so interesting to hear about the variety of different music artists they employed to create the overall sound design, and I was particularly struck by the texture of the music. Each piece had an ambient quality, yet used very different music styles and genres to communicate that quality. It felt like a stormy playlist, full of twists and turns, absolutely perfect for emulating the dreamlike state of the exhibit.
From an intellectual perspective, I do feel as though I lost a bit of the storyline in the experience. While I felt the worldbuilding through the exhibit’s segmented elements and clipboard explanations, I do wish there was a bit more of a clear narrative to the experience. However, that could also be a creative choice. After all, I can’t name any of my own dreams that were clear-cut stories from start to end.
My initial idea for an overarching theme for our project, Haiku Horizons is Accessibility. Across all four projects, I noticed a common thread, which was the low barrier of entry to each of our unique experiences. When it comes to climate education, whether that be in regards to food, heat, natural disaster or material waste, our projects are designed to be teachable to anyone. This theme also encompasses our cross-cultural reach, which makes this topic accessible across language and geographical barriers.
My 3 words and 3 images that represent all 4 projects are:
Mindfulness, Awareness, and Togetherness. See the link below for the supplemental images.
